Wanneer je praat met de fans van Tommy Emmanuel, muzikanten of burgers, zullen ze het steevast hebben over niet één maar twee kwaliteiten die deze grootsheid definiëren. De eerste, voorspelbaar, is zijn buitengewone gitaarspel. Zijn spel wordt door kenners beschouwd als een van de beste ter wereld en is gewoonweg wonderbaarlijk, want er zouden drie of meer muzikanten nodig zijn om te doen wat Tommy solo doet. Wie anders, bijvoorbeeld als hij 'Day Tripper' speelt, kan het ritme neerleggen, de riff spelen en de melodie zingen op slechts één akoestische gitaar?

Dat brengt ons bij het andere aspect van zijn muziek dat altijd wordt genoemd: de vreugde. Het is één ding om deze multidimensionale arrangementen foutloos te spelen op een akoestische gitaar. Hoewel zijn expressie instrumentaal is, komt hij op de gitaar veel meer over als een zanger, die melodieën door de snaren zingt. Hij leeft zich in in de nummers die hij vertolkt, waarbij hij elke nuance en zinswending laat horen. Tommy's eigen songs zijn ook altijd verlicht met lyrische melodieën die recht naar het hart gaan, zoals zijn prachtige ode aan zijn dochter, 'Angelina', zijn grote 'Stories Without Words', of 'Lewis & Clark'. Dat ze zo diep resoneren zonder woorden is logisch, want woorden gaan maar tot op zekere hoogte. Maar muziek, afkomstig van een oprechte en vreugdevolle bron, kan zoveel verder gaan.
